Whatever you’re in the mood for this weekend, there’s no doubt you’ll find something to please you here: from bellydancing to Korean retro, a flea market to a garage party. Take your pick.
Global Myeongdong Festival
This week/end there is an arts festival on at Myeongdong Art Gallery, which features an exhibition of nude works from both Koreans and expats. It started on Wednesday the 13th June and runs until Saturday 30th. For more info, unfortunately only in Korean, go to the Facebook page. There are also directions to the gallery (in English) posted on the event wall.
THURSDAY – SATURDAY
Club Ta 6th Anniversary Festival
Club Ta is hosting an array of bands over four days to celebrate its 6th Anniversary. Ska punk band Kingston Rudieska, indie musicians Huckleberry Finn and pop duo 10cm will all be performing, along with an array of other bands. With mainly Korean acts on the bill, this festival will give you an opportunity to witness some homegrown talent. Watch out for Huckleberry Finn in particular – we saw them play a while ago and they gave the audience a super fun time. See the event on Last.fm to find out more and to check out the bands scheduled to play.
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY
Asia Raqs International Bellydance Festival
This weekend brings the first annual bellydance festival in Korea. If you’re interested in seeing talented dancers, global culture and alternative entertainment, then we strongly suggest heading to Hongdae for at least one night of this event. More details can be found in the preview we posted this week, which comes with a video of the awesome Eshe (also above) bellydancing to some Korean rawwwwk.
G’OLD Vinyl Korea Mixtape Launch Party.
G’Old Vinyl are celebrating the launch of mixtape number two at Exit bar this Friday. If you went to see the Cabin in the Woods preview screening last weekend (we did, and it was awesome by the way), then you will already have a ticket. If you aren’t in possession of a ticket, you enjoy retro music and are into all-night-parties, start considering this event now. G’Old vinyl are making older Korean music accessible to everyone, which is definitely something worth supporting. Get more information on the event here, including the chance to hear the new mixtape.
Broken Teeth Presents French DJ Sovnger at Club Mansion
French DJ Sovgner, whose pseudonym comes from the Danish translation of ‘sleepwalker’, is appearing at Club Mansion this Friday night. He has recently produced his first EP under Alex Gopher’s label and his tracks have been playlisted by some of the bigger name DJs on the electro scene, including 2 Many Dj’s, Erol Alkan and Breakbot. As well as electro, Sovgner produces techno, hip hop and groove music. For free pre-11:30pm guestlist to this event you need to register at게스트리스트 등록하러 가기 on Guestlist App.
Itaewon Flea Market
Everyone loves a good bargain, and the people at Globe Lounge are giving you the opportunity to grab one at their second summer flea market. This is a large scale affair, and after the success of the last one it’s likely to be bigger and better than before. There will be cold beverages, a cool breeze and plenty of cheap items to purchase, but make sure you bring plenty of cash – the vendors will not have card facilities. Further information can be found here.
VLUF Garage Party
We all remember the freezing cold, snowy and graffiti-filled VLUF rooftop event in March (pictures here to get you amped). Now the organisers are bringing us a summer spectacular, fully charged and ready to go with bands, DJs, art, food and cocktails. Plus, who wouldn’t want to be seen at the hipster event of the year?
Entry is 10,000 won and the party in located just out of exit 3 of Seongsu station in East Seoul (not Sangsu Station near Hongdae). The party’s address is 322-321 1-dong, Seongsu 2-ga, Seongdong-gu, Seoul. Here’s the Facebook page, and here’s more information on Chincha.
As always, let us know if there are any other events we should be talking about, either by email on firstname.lastname@example.org or in a comment.
