Seoul Fringe Festival
Starting on Saturday, Seoul Fringe Festival runs for over two weeks and celebrates artistic endeavors on the edges of Korean society. The festival is happening all over the Hongdae area, meaning that we’ve included several Hongdae night-time happenings in Events This Week for you to enjoy after witnessing the random, sporadic performances that will be popping up all over our favourite university district. Find all the info on the festival in English on Visit Korea.
Henri-Cartier Bresson Exhibition
We mentioned this photography exhibit in a previous events article and urge you to visit as soon as possible since it ends this weekend. Henry Cartier-Bresson was a photojournalist and is often lauded as being one of the developers of street photography. The exhibition, named ‘De Qui S’agit-il?’, will show over 250 of Cartier-Bresson’s images, as well as relevant documents illustrating his life and career. Entry costs 12,000 won and the location is Sejong Center Exhibition Hall. See here for directions.
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY
F.OUND Week Festival
Uber trendy Korean culture magazine F.OUND are holding a music festival this weekend, from Friday August 31st. A ticket is a steal at 22,000w a day (or 33,000 for two), but if you’re feeling extra thrifty this week then Community Korea are giving away 20 pairs of passes to the event on their FB page. If you’re not lucky enough to win a ticket, you can either buy one in advance at Interpark or on the door of AX Korea from 2pm. It’ll be worth it to see rap star Garion and rockers Galaxy Express.
LNL Present at Quadro
Some up and coming DJs (Deero, Dambi Kim, Zach H + Rob McCall) are being presented by Lessnless at new venue Quadro (near Exit) this weekend. Hit the venue from 10pm for some free deep house. Example in the video below.
Dance Music For Old People
If you’ve never heard of this event before then head straight to our preview, which includes an exclusive mix from the bands playing at the brand new, live, funk, soul, rock and blues, music night. Advance tickets are 10,000w or 15,000 on the door of Powwow Seoul and bands include Aguddle and Earls.
Rooftop Night Vol.1
After Platoon Kunsthalle’s monthly flea market, the venue made out of cargo containers will be holding an event on their Gangnam rooftop, including a silent film screening of documentary Berlinized (wireless headphones will be available). Magpie Brewing Co. are supplying beers, which we can firmly attest are 964 times better than Hite and Cass. We particularly want to go because Platoon are telling us it “should be a hoot” and because the drinks menu looks phenomenal.
The Meet Market – For Queers and their Allies
The monthly Meet Market has come around again, celebrating all gender and sexuality choices in a superfun disco at Myoungwolgwan. This time, the theme is ‘White Party’, meaning you, err, have to wear all white for a free shot at the door. The organisers are also calling for used bras and donations for Free the Girls, a charity which donates undergarments for women rescued from sex trafficking to sell within their communities for a decent profit. Entry is 10,000w (plus free drink) and doors open at 9pm.
We haven’t been to Freebird for a while and are feeling nostalgic for a night at the Hongdae rock club. This event should fix things for us – described as a ‘gentlemanly’ evening, entry is a mere 5000 won and for that you get three rock bands followed by three DJs. Here’s the event page for the details.
Social Underground 8
Another regular Hongdae event, Social Underground is back this weekend at EXIT, the garage bar near the park playground (see the map on the poster). The high quality electro event brings guest DJs Sam Gates and Paffers from Busan’s STRUT! team. Check out the interview with the guys on AWEH and start amping yourself up for some filthy beats.
