FRIDAY – MONDAY

SOAF 2012

This Friday is the opening ceremony for SOAF 2012 (Seoul Open Art Fair). Since 2006 it has become the fastest growing art fair in Korea, consisting of over 96 galleries and 13 enterprises showcasing young and emerging artists from all over Korea. The exhibitions will feature various forms of experimental art. You can take a look at SOAF’s website for details on the exhibition, which will be held within the COEX.

FRIDAY

Audio XL at Club Phantom

“Out beyond the obsessive regurgitation of electro-house’s Beatport Top 100 downloads for shuffling-addict replays, AUDIO XL was conspired to act like relief aid and haul in medicinally choice hip hop coaxed through the history of an epic genre and into its many mutations”.

The award for the alternative night out this week goes to Audio XL. It’s not often we see quality hip hop nights being advertised and this looks like it’s going to smash it.  With acts performing on both a main and a side stage and a line-up featuring Simo & Mood Schula, Black Ilumin, DJ YTst – plus many more – it looks like Club Phantom is where you’re going to need to be this Friday night.  The event starts at 9pm, goes on until 6am and you can get free guestlist before 12 (or it’s 20,000won with a free drink afterwards).  Here’s more .

SATURDAY

Cinco De Mayo

Cinco De Mayo is not just a sexy way of saying 5th of May, it’s also an excuse to party Mexican stylee. There will be an outdoor “Cinco de Mayo” festival at Yoeksam station on Saturday afternoon with Tomatillo Mexican Grill providing food and drinks plus 5 live bands, including a Mariachi Band. The festival will be from 12 noon to 8pm and last year apparently enticed a crowd of 1000+ people.

So, put on your brightly coloured clothes and grab your sombrero just head to Yeoksam station (line 3/green line) exit 2.  You’ll find the festival just outside the exit near the Gangnam Finance Center.

Charity Vegan Bake Sale at Fell + Cole

People trying to live a healthy lifestyle seem to be on the rise these days – emphasis on the word trying. Vegan or not, there will be a lot of scrumptious sounding things for sale this Saturday at Fell + Cole ice cream shop in Hongdae, including cookies, muffins and whoopie pies (whatever they are).  Mipa Lee of the brilliant vegan blog Alien’s Day Out is one of the organisers and we’ve been keen to try out her baked goods ever since we did this interview with her for our ‘Blog of the Week’ series.  For directions check the Facebook .

GodsKitchen Fusion Cube with BOYSNOIZE

This is going to be a top night, with Boysnoize headlining alongside big name local DJs Astro Voize, Inside Core and King McK. ‘What is a fusion cube?’ – I hear you cry. Well, a fusion cube is a mix of LED screens, state-of-the-art lighting, laser strips and other high- tech ‘things’, creating a mirage of special effects. For a clearer picture see the video below and for information on how to buy ticket visit the GodsKitchen website.

Social Underground at EXIT

Social Underground is back this Saturday at your favourite (and only) grimy garage bar in Seoul. Last month’s Social Underground drew a ton people to the dancefloor to sweat it out to music that matters. This time you can expect some of the same, with DJs Lewis Anthony and Raico on the decks.  If you’re in Hongdae already it would be silly not to drop by. Check out the event for Bar EXIT’s location –  if you don’t know it already.
