This is a review of Sunset Breakz 2012. Sunset Breakz 2013 is this Saturday, Oct. 5 at 선녀바위 해변 (Seonyeobawui Beach), Yeongjongdo, Incheon (just past the airport). .
When friends, DJ Helix Squared and MC Lucid got together to throw a self-funded end of summer beach rave, they knew location would be paramount. So it must have been an easy choice when they discovered a gorgeous and secluded beach just 20 minutes west of Incheon Airport, where the volume could be on loud and people could go nuts. With the help of Ian Llewellyn a.k.a. DJ Altitude, they put together this free event to show their appreciation to all the ravers who regularly attend their shows in Seoul. It also became an opportunity to bring people together for a wider exposure to the drum and bass genre.
Just before the basslines started dropping, the military stepped in to announce that shooting drills would be taking place throughout the night. After a minor relocation of the beats, tents, and ravers, the boundaries were set and a wicked party ensued.
MC Lucid carried the energy all night as L.E.T. (Low End Theory), Filthy Friday, Internal Stereo, Xcessive Bass, Bass Attack and Helix Squared flooded everyone’s ears with continuous bang-up, drum-n-bass rhythms that kept everyone moving. At its height, about 200 people were lured by the notion of a party on the beach until the sunrise. The fire and glowstick poi, frisbees, footballs, and loads of fireworks helped supplement the energy level through the night.
During a party where a couch just appeared on the beach and the cultural diversity was elevated by an outpouring of foreign exchange students, almost no one could mar this perfect conclusion to the summer season. Spawned by the overwhelming positive feedback and desire to throw a killer party, there’s already talk of a winter version.
