After six-plus months of dirtying the floors at Hongdae’s most well known den of iniquity, EXIT, house and bass enthusiasts SILK/JUICE will take their next party to Col.l.age+, a new multi-use arts and performance space in Cheongdam run by noted Korean sculptor Jang Seung Hyo. Titled (CLOUD9) in honor of the celestial décor – all crafted by Jang – that currently covers the venue, SILK/JUICE residents Rob McCall, Zach H and Trashvortex will join Seoul scene fixture J-PATH on Saturday December 8th from 10pm to 4am for a FREE night of jams, drinks, dancing and other assorted debaucheries.

To introduce and learn more about this new venue, Zach H was able to grab Jang Seung Hyo and briefly discuss the past, present and future of Col.l.age+.

Q: First off, please describe Col.l.age+ for our readers. How do you envision this space?

A: Col.l.age+ is a name that actually represents different forms of art coming together. Some would say that Col.l.age+ is a type of experimental project in which we hope to bring all things considered Art into one creative space. What with the many different types of art forms, such as music, art, design, architecture, performance, fashion and etc., any type of collaboration with more than one of these art forms often proves to be tricky because there are so many variables. Herein lies the experimental nature of this project. We hope to make Col.l.age+ more of a multi-faceted experience rather than just another art gallery; a place where the audience is not only there to look, but where we can retrospectively view Col.l.age+ through the creative minds of the audience as an invaluable source of feedback.

Q: What was the motivation behind opening Col.l.age+? How are each of you involved with the space?

A: From the mid 90′s I have had a lot of time to think about how I could mix up different genres of art. “Why must we define each and every thing into such a small box called genre? These terms itself seem to limit the endless possibilities of expression in art. Of course, my major is in sculpture, if I must be constrained to a specific genre. But I have always been passionate about and very much involved in several different areas of art throughout my career. In fact, years ago I was even in a rock band.

When you see it as a form of interaction between artist and audience, there really isn’t any difference whether it’s art or music or sculpture or any other expression of art. So… after many years, I finally decided to try and create an art space where different types of art could be fused together, often creating something totally different in the process. I was always driven by a deep desire to experiment, and there are many of these so-called experiments that I have yet to see happen. Many people have already shown a tremendous interest in Col.l.age+ and there are always new and fresh ideas bubbling up from the collective minds of those involved.

Q: Who else might become involved in the project and what will they bring to the space?

A: We at Col.l.age+ sincerely hope to see many different exhibitions and shows happen here. We are constantly meeting with up and coming artists and leading art directors from various social and artistic circles in order to discuss new directions and artistic experiments. There are always ideas, new directions to take, attempts to do things that haven’t been done before. And then we brainstorm about how to make these ideas happen. That said, once an idea has been chosen, there are further meetings that decide the overall direction of the project and who would best be suited to carry out this vision to fruition.

Q: How long has Col.l.age+ been operating and what kinds of events has it hosted thus far?

A: Col.l.age+ first opened on September 21st, 2012, with my own exhibition, entitled “Two Heavens.” The exhibition stayed on display for about a month, and then we made the transition into business as an art lounge. So far we’ve had six concerts that have included jazz and other types of musical performance, and we also had the privilege of hosting a dance battle at one point as well.

Q: How do you see Col.l.age+ evolving in the near future? What do you wish for the space to become five years from now?

A: Col.l.age+ will always strive to open a new realm of artistic fusion and hopefully birth a whole new generation of spaces run by like-minded people. Not only restricted to Seoul or even Korea, we would also like to extend our artistic influence to Busan and Jeju Island and hopefully see places like Col.l.age+ form overseas, thus enabling us to create opportunities to work with local artists and keep doing what we love to do, experimenting. We are hoping that in the next five years, the vision of Col.l.age+ will grow into something much bigger than an art gallery or art lounge. Something that can no longer be contained as a mere idea, but could very well burst forth into a movement. A second Renaissance, if you will.

Q: Col.l.age+

Q: Col.l.age+
